Light and Zest

was born out of a need to make things…

beautiful things, and things with meaning.

Light and Zest is created and curated by Jessie Courson, hoping to encourage women to claim their God-given beauty: body & soul, enjoy the life they’ve been given, and embrace the God who made them.

She is a trained painter who graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with highest honors. She is a graphic and website designer always looking for new clients. She has been assisting with the building businesses with design for over 10 years. She plays delightful and often imperfect roles, such as: wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, Christian, American who has lived overseas, white woman, and most specifically: middle aged human being.

She likes to think and create around the process of being a spiritual being in a human world. Most of her work is about the interior life of thought, feeling, and how God can interplay with us on that level if we let Him. She wonders how our lives would be different if we applied the truths of Scripture in small practical steps. She attempts to do this herself, knowing she could never do it perfectly, but that should never stop her from trying.

Qualifications: Human

She is not an expert at anything.
She has come to the same conclusion time-and-time again: clarifying who she is and what she thinks on paper is challenging yet also fulfilling. Sharing it is scary, yet somehow a sacred act of being human. She continues to enjoy experimentation in art and writing while making her tiny way.

Why the name Light and Zest?

Here is the quote that inspired the name:

“Light, space, zest—that’s God! So, with him on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing.”

– Psalm 27:1 MSG

This does not mean that I am not scared from time to time.
But, when I am I have a helpful God to go to. Like a little child, I can ask for what I need when I am scared.
I can be simple and happy. Simple isn’t always stupid.
– Written by a former cynic, oh I mean, me.

Jessie designs, creates, and writes under the premise that…

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all...

– 1 Timothy 2:3-6A NKJV

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

– Romans 8:28 NKJV
